Organic Trace Minerals
What Are Organic Trace Minerals?
Trace minerals are the micronutrients plants need in small amounts to do big jobs — building chlorophyll, activating enzymes, forming proteins, and moving water and nutrients through roots, stems, and leaves. “Organic trace minerals” means that mineral supply comes from a natural, OMRI Listed source rather than a synthetic one, so it fits into an organic growing program.
Flora Bella's organic trace minerals for plants come from Bucatunna clay, laid down in Mississippi by an ancient river and carrying more than 70 trace minerals in a single deposit. We compost that clay for six to eight months to wake up the naturally occurring microbes living in it, then dry and handle it with care to keep that biology intact. The result is two OMRI Listed products — Bio Trace and Microdust — built to put real organic trace minerals back into garden and farm soil.
Why Plants Need Trace Minerals
Most fertilizer programs are built around nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium — NPK. Those three matter, but they're not the whole story. Trace minerals for plants do the supporting work that NPK alone can't:
- Supporting deep green foliage and energy production in leaves
- Activating enzymes and regulating the hormones behind healthy growth
- Supporting protein synthesis and stronger cell walls
- Helping roots access nutrients that already exist in the soil
- Supporting cell division and fruit and seed development
A plant that's short on trace minerals doesn't usually fail outright — it just underperforms: slower growth, pale or uneven leaf color, weaker stems, and fewer flowers or fruit than the same plant would produce in balanced soil. Because trace minerals are needed in such small amounts, it's easy to assume a fertilizer has them covered when it doesn't. Checking what's actually in your soil, or simply adding a broad-spectrum organic trace mineral amendment, is the more reliable fix.
Why Organic Trace Minerals Matter for Your Soil
Plants can only use the trace minerals their soil can deliver. That's a soil biology and soil structure question as much as a nutrition one, which is why Flora Bella is built around three things working together, not a single nutrient:
- Trace minerals — the 70+ naturally occurring minerals themselves.
- Humic acid — improves soil structure, aggregation, and water-holding capacity, and helps bind and retain nutrients in the root zone.
- Fulvic acid — binds trace minerals into forms plants can actually use, and helps move them through plant cell walls for better uptake.
Because Bio Trace and Microdust are composted rather than chemically processed, they're also compost-friendly — they work alongside compost and living soil systems instead of disrupting them, helping unlock what your soil is already capable of rather than forcing a short-term result.
Bio Trace vs. Microdust: Two Organic Trace Mineral Amendments, Two Growth Stages
Flora Bella splits organic trace minerals for plants into two formulas, matched to what a plant needs at each stage:
- Bio Trace is the granular formula, with no added magnesium, for the veg and growth phase — while plants are building roots, stems, and leaves. It's also available in a 2 lb starter size.
- Microdust starts as the same Bucatunna clay, refined into a finer grind with a higher level of magnesium, for seed starts and the flowering and fruiting phase. It's also available in a 2 lb bag.
Many growers use Bio Trace while preparing beds and transplanting, then mix in Microdust once plants move toward flower or fruit.
Signs Your Soil Could Use Organic Trace Minerals
Trace mineral shortages tend to show up gradually rather than all at once, which is part of why they're easy to miss:
- Growth that slows down or stalls even though water and sunlight look fine
- Leaves that are pale, yellowing, or unevenly colored rather than deep green
- Stems that stay thin and weak instead of thickening up as the plant matures
- Fewer flowers or fruit than the plant should be setting at that point in the season
- Soil that's been fertilized the same way, season after season, without a mineral amendment added back in
None of these signs are proof on their own — weather, watering, and pests can cause the same symptoms. But if a garden or bed has been fed the same NPK-focused fertilizer for years, it's worth asking whether the trace minerals plants need were ever replaced, or just used up.
How to Add Organic Trace Minerals to Your Garden
Bio Trace and Microdust both work with the same three application methods, detailed step-by-step in our growing guides:
- Soil blend or top dress: 1–2 ounces per gallon of growing medium, mixed in before planting or worked into the top few inches and watered in.
- Compost tea: 1 tablespoon per gallon, added at the start of the brew.
- Mineral tea: 1 ounce per gallon of water, aerated for 24 hours, then applied as a soil drench.
None of these require special equipment, which is the point — organic trace minerals should be easy to work into a routine you already have, not a separate project.
